upgrading open realty 2.5.8

Well, still sitting on the fence...

Orodha or OR3.X
I think many people feel the same and just sit with 2.5.8 waiting to see the better option.

But PHP3X now finally becoming the standard at multiple hosts and forcing choices. (might want to put an SEO happyy, easy-migrate instruction link under the "1.0.9.3 released" as there will/might be an influx of people searching for alternatives.

Remind me of the pros and cons?  Why is Orodha better than OR3X?

  • is an unimaginative niche commercial product

  • like other open source products that went commercial is being swept away into the dustbin of history.

  • in the past has has mistreated, abused and banned its best developers and supporters from the forum

It's true. We might be biased, but I can tell you the first three things that come into my head:

1) As a PHP "customiser" - you are dead in the water, it's closed, encrypted. you can't modify it and - quite seriously - you can't check it for bugs, or correct them. The community can't oversee security. It's a non-started on this issue alone simple as that.

2) As someone who codes for clients - It's impossible to trust since it "phones home" for license validation. I simply cannot risk having my clients all phone my on the same day asking "Who's Transparent Tech, why is there server down, and why has my website disappeared?

3) As a designer - OR was...(I cannot say how it is now. in fairness)..but it was a nightmare to design for. It has been my remit since being on the Orodha project to remedy that situation! If I haven't applied my 1000th class and id yet, then I must be close! We also instigated body classes, myriad extra templates, the move to php and much, much more. Templating for Orodha is now pretty much a dream to be honest, it cuts developement time, eases maintenance and saves headaches. Or your money back! [cough]

4) Oh yeah...hey it's free.

5) The forum members are house trained.

Was that three things?

Let's turn this around a bit. Can anyone name any benefits of using Open Realty (R) over Orodha or another similar listings system? I can't think of any.

The one thing that you are sure to get from Orodha is continuous improvement be it from the "official" developers or people that contribute on this forum and want to better the product. Look at me - I'm the King of Core Hacks to make things work the way that I need them to work and I have shared what I have done on this forum because I think it makes the Orodha package that much better. If I did that on the OR forum I would be banned. On this forum I'm sometimes told it was a good idea and has been added to the next release.

Even if you don't know enough about PHP to add to the code you can make a suggestion and it will be considered as part of a future release or an addon. On the OR forum you would be told to shut your pie hole.

Continuous improvement. That's the name of the game here.
